With my awards, I mostly tried to stick to anything that has taken place in America. I know that is not exactly kind to countries such as Japan, which in a fell swoop would likely have my promotion of the year, wrestler of the year, and most improved (NJPW, Tanahashi, Okada respectively), but on account of the fact that I have not watched as much from Japan as I would like, I feel it is only fair to keep to the US as to not discredit other promotions out there. Hope that is understandable.
Wrestler of the Year
1. El Generico
2. Austin Aries
3. CM Punk
4. Kevin Steen
5. Johnny Gargano
Honorable Mentions: AJ Styles, AR Fox, Bobby Roode, Davey Richards, Daniel Bryan, Eddie Kingston, Seth Rollins, Sheamus
In what will hopefully not be the last year for Generico to be #1 wrestler of the year, Generico showed off why many consider him to be the best wrestler in the world today. After having an ill-timed absence from ROH, Generico continued to show off his ability in promotions like DGUSA/EVOLVE & Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, having outstanding contests with many different opponents. With the right opponent, he can be the best underdog in the business today and when not put in that position. In the process in DGUSA/EVOLVE, he helped pave the way for one of the new sensations of the independent scene in Samuray Del Sol, who everyone should expect big things out of in 2013.
When Austin Aries said in an interview on TV earlier this year that he put TNA on his back, he was not kidding. Ever since he has come back to TNA in June of 2011, the guy has been must see on almost every PPV. In 2012 in particular, any time he was in a singles match, he had the match of the night (or close to it) with a variety of opponents (from Alex Shelley to Bully Ray to Bobby Roode to Jeff Hardy) in a variety of situations and capped it off in July of 2012 by becoming the TNA World Heavyweight Champion at Destination X.
It’s hard to include someone who was champion for an entire calendar year in the biggest promotion in the United States and not call them wrestler of the year. While that reign has since come to an end, Punk did all he could to raise his stock for the year and provided lots of memorable matches in the process including a PPV series with Chris Jericho and Daniel Bryan. As a character, he sort of fell into the WWE molded face for the first half of the year before doing what he does best as a heel from July through the remainder of the year.
Kevin Steen in the eyes of many, much like Aries in TNA, has put ROH on his back for the last couple of years. This year, he had his biggest success by dethroning Davey Richards to become the ROH World Heavyweight Champion, a title he still holds to this day after defeating a variety of opponents in many great contests, the best of which was his defense against Michael Elgin in Toronto at Glory By Honor XI. Steen has also made his presence known in PWG where he held their World Title for the majority of the year and even went to Chikara where he feuded with Eddie Kingston, including captaining a team for the Cibernetico.
To say that Johnny Gargano has become the ambassador for DGUSA/EVOLVE is an understatement. Like CM Punk, he has held the Open The Freedom Gate Championship for the 2012 calendar year. Like Aries/Generico on this list, he has had a ton of great matches with a ton of great opponents. Unlike everyone on here, he had a particularly rough start to the year with his physical condition in the injury to his back at EVOLVE 10, but used that as motivation to make a comeback at the Wrestlemania weekend DGUSA shows. Masato Yoshino, AR Fox, Chuck Taylor, Akira Tozawa, Sami Callihan, Ricochet, and Jon Davis all could not dethrone Gargano in throughout the year. Come Wrestlecon, we will see if Shingo can be the one to make it happen.
Feud of the Year
1. The Rock vs. John Cena
2. Bobby Roode vs. Austin Aries
3. John Cena vs. CM Punk
4. CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan
5. Bobby Roode vs. James Storm
Most feuds this year sort of stunk in terms of major dynamic to them. Rock/Cena earns #1 in terms of it was the feud that made the most bank, even if I thought it was lazily done for the most part. Aries/Roode was a simple build and helped turn Aries into a top name in TNA. While Cena/Punk did not get as involved as they had in 2011, their brief feud in the end of Summer 2011 saw one of my favorite promos of the year on the Raw prior to Night of Champions 2012. Punk/Bryan lacked in out-of-the-ring material due to AJ Lee being the focal point, but they really brought it in the ring. Storm/Roode did not go as ideally as I would have liked, but it had a great conclusion and a lot of great stuff prior to that including the promo before Lockdown which was another one of my favorite interviews of 2012.

This is always the most difficult award to figure for me because whether or not a promotion is consistent throughout the year, each promotion has the ability to allow their wrestlers to go out there and put on the best match they can possibly have.

Most Overrated
1. Garett Bischoff
2. Devon
3. Ryback
4. Rob Van Dam
5. Bo Dallas
While the second half of the year was pretty quiet for Garett, in the first half of the year for TNA before they got into their groove, he was treated pretty highly on both television and PPV at times, including being the entire focal point of one of the weakest Lethal Lockdowns in TNA history, a match that usually without fail at least is good – great. Being the son of Eric Bischoff, he has an aura to him that already gives the case of him being there strictly because of his father.
Devon is a perfectly fine wrestler and had some fine mid-card matches during the summer of TNA. When he became a top heel of one of the worst stables in recent memory, that jumped him higher up as being overrated.
I can’t be too critical of Ryback because he at least was partial reason why Hell In A Cell was such a success in terms of buys, but in terms of as a wrestler, when he is doing anything besides squashes, he is very difficult to watch.
I used to love Rob Van Dam, but he is simply collecting a paycheck. I understand that he is getting older, but with the way that TNA books him, it is very difficult to like him with how often he wins despite his offense looking like being hit by tissue paper.
Bo Dallas has been a focal point of FCW and the re-branded NXT and I find it difficult to see what is seen in him besides a last name. He gives a whole new meaning to the “five moves of doom.”
